WORTH THE PRICE: I’ve tasted better for less.

BOTTLE, BAR, OR BUST: It is very unusual; you should taste this at a Bar before committing to a bottle.

OVERALL: I am not a tequila drinker. I’ve penned a tequila review before, and it bordered on being reasonably useless. I’m a whiskey reviewer. That’s my jam. However, my wife, Michelle (a/k/a Mrs. Whiskeyfellow), is a tequila sommelier. While I did drink this alongside her to try and learn something about tequila, these notes are hers, and I’m writing this under her guidance.

Alacrán is packaged in a beautiful, matte black bottle, giving the appearance of a luxurious spirit. It is cooked with water sourced from Alacrán’s own well and naturally fermented with Alacrán’s own yeast. It is distilled through an “exclusive and multiple distillation” process.

Alacrán has a lovely, fragrant nose. What makes this tequila unique is the palate. The mouthfeel and front of the palate are like water - so much so that you wonder at the first sip if something was forgotten. But then, at mid-palate, an explosion of black pepper is so intense it makes discovering other flavors a chore. Once you overcome the pepper, toasted walnut, and cool menthol appear, leading to a medium finish of dry wood and black pepper.

The best thing about Alacrán is the surprise at the front. Overall, this tequila would make an interesting mixer or basic shots, but it's not something I’d recommend for sipping.
