Glenn’s Creek Distilling is housed in what was the Old Crow Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. It had been abandoned for 30 some-odd years before owner David Meier; also its distiller, purchased it to open his distillery. He loved the building and all of its history.
“[David] has always had a love for where things are made, how they are made, and the level of craftsmanship that went into their making. This love of creation was one of the driving forces behind his career in manufacturing and yearning to create something of his own.” – Glenn’s Creek Distilling
Today I’m sipping on SWheat Bourbon. Distilled via a pot still from a mash of
87% corn, 10% wheat, and 3% malted barley, SWheat matured for two years in toasted
and #3-charred American oak barrels. This Bourbon is non-chill filtered,
proofed to 103°, and a 750ml package has a suggested retail price of $62.31. The
bottle I have comes from Barrel #7.
So,
why “SWheat” as a name? David jokingly says they paid the marketing department
$20.00 to come up with a name, and all they handed him was an S. He will be the
first to say he believes he was overcharged!
Before
I #DrinkCurious, I must thank Glenn’s Creek Distilling for providing me with
a sample of this Bourbon in exchange for a no-strings-attached, honest review.
Let’s get to it, shall we?
Appearance: Poured
neat into my Glencairn glass, SWheat presented as caramel with a thicker rim.
In turn, wide tears ran down the wall of the glass and back into the pool.
Nose: Caramel
exploded out of my glass, accompanied by banana cream pie and oak. Inhaling the
vapor through my lips brought more caramel.
Palate: The
liquid was thick and heavy. SWheat likes to stick with a theme. The caramel was
heavy from front to back. However, on the front, it was joined by vanilla; the
middle offered banana pudding and whipped cream, while the back featured oak,
black pepper, and leather.
Finish: If you
thought the caramel was over and done with, sorry, not sorry. Rich caramel,
oak, and black pepper stuck around for a long-lasting finish.
Bottle, Bar, or Bust:
Obviously, if caramel isn’t your jam, then SWheat isn’t something you should
try. For the rest of us, this is a caramel lover's dream. It is unique and
delicious, and I believe it offers quite a bang for the buck. That’s a recipe
for a Bottle rating, and I’m happy
to have this one in my whiskey library. Cheers!

Hey Jeff, Thanks for the review. I must have missed it. One thing...it is a wheated bourbon, so it is about 10% wheat and not rye.
ReplyDeleteThanks, David, I got that fixed. Cheers!
DeleteOh, and it is $62.31 not $76 This is David by the way
