Founded
by Joyce and Bruce
Nethery in 2013, Jeptha Creed was meant to be
handed down to their children, Autumn and Hunter. Joyce serves as the Master Distiller; Autumn is
the Marketing Manager. Bruce grows grains, and Hunter is the beekeeper who
provides honey for the various spirits produced. The distillery was built on
the family cornfield in Shelbyville County, Kentucky.
Home-grown
Bloody Butcher corn is used for all of Jeptha Creed’s products. Bruce, a
fifth-generation farmer, has over 1000 acres of cropland, and anything Bruce
can’t grow himself is sourced from nearby farms, making everything hyper-local.
Who,
or what, is Jeptha Creed?
“’Ne Oublie’ is a Scottish Gaelic saying meaning ‘Never Forget,’ a phrase that’s been passed down through the Nethery family for generations. Jeptha Creed was founded on the motto ‘Don’t Forget Where You Came From,’ and we hold true to that to this day. With their incredibly well-rounded backgrounds, creativity, unparalleled work ethic and love for the rich heritage of Kentucky and Scotland, Joyce and Autumn Nethery decided to continue the ‘Ne Oublie’ legacy while adding their own bit of Jeptha Creed flare.” – Jeptha Creed
In
2016, the distillery barreled its first Bourbon, the county's first legal one
since Prohibition. It released that Bourbon in 2019. Today, Jeptha Creed fills
nine Bourbon barrels a day.
I’ve
reviewed a handful of Jeptha Creed’s whiskeys and found them pleasant. Today, I’ll
explore its Four
Grain Bourbon Mash Bill, and I must thank
Jeptha Creed for providing me with a sample in exchange for my no-strings-attached,
honest review. Let’s #DrinkCurious and discover what it is all about!
- Whiskey Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon
- Distiller: Jeptha Creed
- Age: NAS
- Mashbill: 70% Bloody Butcher corn, 15% malted rye, 10% malted wheat, and 5% malted barley
- Cooperage: 53-gallon new, charred oak barrels
- Alcohol Content: 49% ABV (98°)
- Price per 750mL: $48.99
Appearance: I used
a Glencairn glass to explore this Bourbon neat. Inside, the whiskey presented
as a deep orange amber, with a medium-thick rim. A slow, wavy curtain of tears
was discharged.
Nose: After
allowing about 15 minutes for the whiskey to breathe, I brought the glass to my
face and started sniffing. The aroma consisted of floral rye, graham crackers, apricots,
strawberries, and boysenberries. Drawing the air through my lips, I encountered
more graham crackers.
Palate: Jeptha
Creed’s mouthfeel was dense and creamy. That first sip included a ton of flavors
rushing at me at once. The second sip let me concentrate on what was happening on
my tongue. I tasted dry leather, shredded tobacco, and roasted almonds on the
front. My mid-palate discerned vanilla, nutmeg, and mint, while the back featured
clove, cinnamon spice, and barrel char.
Finish: After I
swallowed, I closed my eyes and concentrated on what remained, which included
mint, barrel char, clove, vanilla, and roasted almonds. I took out my stopwatch;
the duration ran only 0:52; it seemed far longer.
Bottle, Bar, or Bust: There
is a lot to like about this Bourbon. It is well-balanced, captivating, and has
a wonderful texture. It drinks at about its stated proof. There’s almost no “burn,”
and I found myself looking forward to the next sip. It is even priced
competitively.
Jeptha Creed is one of
those controversial distilleries, and I genuinely don’t understand why. While it
isn’t producing “me too” whiskeys, it isn’t offering stuff that belongs in the
fringes. So far, everything I’ve tried from Jeptha Creed has been lovely, and
that includes its Four Grain Bourbon Mash Bill.
Look, presumably, you read
my reviews because your palate is somewhat similar to my own. And my palate
tells me that buying a Bottle of Four Grain Bourbon Mash Bill is a good
investment. Cheers!
