OVERALL: I’m a fan of Irish whiskey and have
slowly added those I enjoy to my library. When this bottle arrived, I was
cautiously excited. The presentation is lovely, with a beautiful,
expensive-looking label on the front and a backstory that made me curious about
the quality of the bottle. After all, there’s only a handful of working
distilleries in Ireland, and Pugilist Spirits is not one of them. This was
obviously an upstart.
I cut through the paper strip and pulled the
cork. Almost immediately, the malt and floral aromas caught my attention. I
poured a dram into my Glencairn glass and set it aside for about ten minutes like
I do for any whiskey. Round One was unimpressive. It tasted rough, and I felt
like I was sucker punched by a fancy label and promise, but I wasn’t nearly
ready to throw in the towel.
I took a five-minute break before starting
Round Two. It is always amazing what a few extra minutes of patience will gain
you. The next sip provided a mouthfeel that was soft and creamy. The
combination of flavors on the palate is a delicious knock-out, and it becomes
evident that Prizefight is a major contender in the Irish whiskey realm.
Prizefight left me stunned. This is one of
the better whiskeys I’ve tasted this year and one of the best Irish whiskeys
I’ve ever had. Get a bottle. You won’t be disappointed. Cheers!
